Family Owned Since 1954

For 68 years, Sullivan Harware has been dedicated to its community to provide best in class products, services, and customer support to local businesses and neighbors.

Spanning nearly seven decades and two generations, the Sullivan family commitment to build the community through offerings and philanthropy has not faded.

Below you'll be able to find a brief history of the Sullivan family and their transformation from an independent mom and pop shop to one of the largest hardware retailers in the state of Indiana. All while maintaining their original mission and local small business feel.

Sullivan Hardware Family Roots

Robert Sullivan

In 1954,

Sullivan Hardware, now Sullivan Hardware & Garden, was founded by Robert Sullivan after serving in World War II and the Korean War. His wife, Rita, ran their first store located on East Washington Street in Indianapolis while he continued running his contracting business.

Pat Sullivan & Family

In 1963,

The store was moved to 71st and Keystone where it remains today. After 35 years in the hardware business, Robert retired in 1989, and his son, Pat, took over the store. Since, Pat Sullivan has opened two additional locations; the first at 49th and Penn and the other in Cicero, Indiana. Later, he purchased Allisonville Nursery located in Fishers, Indiana.

Fun Fact

Robert Sullivan won Irish Citizen of the year in 2008, before passing away in 2010. You could catch him frequently scooting around in his electric chair at the store saying "I'm the old bastard who started this place!"

Our Hardware Roots

Sullivan Hardware & Garden is a member of the Do it Best Corp., which is currently the fastest growing co-op in the industry and Indiana’s largest privately-owned business. Do it Best Corp. is also the only full-service, member-owned hardware and building materials distributor in the industry and serves a worldwide network of 4,100 individually owned hardware stores in all 50 states and 47 countries.
